We have administrative staff on search-and-rescue teams, ski patrols and helping settle refugees, while many retired employees return to volunteer at The Ottawa Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the hundreds of hospital staff members who volunteer because they want to help make life better for the people in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something unique and special about taking your nursing skills to the community,\u201d said<br \/>\nRN <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2icW5NI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexis Near<\/a>, who volunteers for the Ottawa Race Weekend. \u201cThe best thing of all is that it doesn\u2019t even feel like work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RN <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hoKqvo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tracey Palmer<\/a>&nbsp;was amazed at the reluctance to discuss sexuality concerns of spinal cord injury patients. But she has helped change that, first as a nurse at the hospital and now as a volunteer with Spinal Cord Injury Ontario where she is a sexuality and disability educator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVolunteering allows me to share this and make a difference in people\u2019s lives,\u201d said Palmer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/J-Dec-Vol-Karen-Leveillee-centre-1-WEB-LG.jpg\" alt=\"Karen Leveillee\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearblock\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><em>As a volunteer firefighter, RN Karen L\u00e9veill\u00e9e (centre) responds to house fires, CO<sub>2<\/sub> alarms, vehicle collisions and rescues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A thirst for excitement definitely plays a role for some volunteers. Whenever RN <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hFrjjs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karen L\u00e9veill\u00e9e<\/a> isn\u2019t at the hospital, she\u2019s on call 24\/7 as a volunteer firefighter in Chelsea, Quebec.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt meets all my adrenaline junkie requirements,\u201d said L\u00e9veill\u00e9e. \u201cA lot of my nursing skills are put to the test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise for physiotherapist <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hFlumc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vicki Thomson<\/a>, who volunteers for the Ottawa Race Weekend, The Ride and the Army Run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI volunteer because I am an adrenaline junkie, a loud advocate for staying active, and because it&#8217;s just the right thing to do,\u201d said Thomson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #0000ff;\">\u201cVolunteering is a never-ending joy, simply because you\u2019re always learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever injured yourself while skiing, you\u2019ll appreciate <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hoNveT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emma St-Georges\u2019<\/a>&nbsp;volunteer work. She\u2019s one of the Canadian Ski Patrol volunteers who deliver first aid and bring people down the ski hill by toboggan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen someone is injured I am not just a bystander \u2013 I can help if needed,\u201d said St-Georges, who works as an Administrative Assistant in the Cancer Program.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft img-responsive\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/J-Dec-Vol-Ruth-Gillespie-and-Janet-Eve_WEB-LG.jpg\" alt=\"Ruth Gillespie and Janet Eve\" width=\"643\" height=\"264\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearblock\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><em>Many retired employees return to volunteer at The Ottawa Hospital.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Administrative Assistant <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hXHlTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laura Dunn<\/a> also rescues people \u2013 such as lost hikers and injured snowshoers \u2013 with Sauvetage B\u00e9n\u00e9vole Outaouais \u2013 Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue. \u201cA word of advice: cell coverage is very patchy in Gatineau Park, and you cannot rely on your phone or the GPS app, especially in winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graduate student <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hoI7IM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Felicia Deonarine<\/a> describes volunteering as not just a passion, but also a lifestyle: \u201cVolunteering is a never-ending joy, simply because you\u2019re always learning.\u201d She volunteers with Ancoura, which supports adults living with mental illness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #0000ff;\">\u201cI volunteer because I am an adrenaline junkie, a loud advocate for staying active, and because it&#8217;s just the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hXE8n6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heather Simon<\/a>&nbsp;, Patient Advocacy Specialist, volunteers with her church\u2019s sponsorship group to support a Syrian refugee family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeeting the family face-to-face has made me feel especially grateful for everything we have here in Canada,\u201d Simon said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Journal <\/em>Editor <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2h7Q47e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathryn Young<\/a>&nbsp;also helps new Canadians \u2013 she uses her language skills to tutor immigrants in English as a second language.<\/p>\n<p>Many others also volunteer because they too receive benefits from helping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think volunteering is one of the most selfish things you can do because it makes you feel so good,\u201d explained <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2id9zsN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Gordon<\/a>, who volunteers at the Civic Campus Information desk with his wife, retired RN <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2id9zsN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jane Gordon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end you are exhausted but it is rewarding, a great way to meet lots of interesting people, a different way to be a nurse and a lot of fun!\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ha8KoO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barb Bijman<\/a>, an Intensive Care Unit nurse who volunteers during the Ottawa Race Weekend.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft img-responsive\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/J-Dec-Vol-Kim-Lamont-1-WEB-LG.jpg\" alt=\"Kim Lamont\" width=\"640\" height=\"416\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearblock\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><em>Kim Lamont volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, with its Camp Smitty, because it helped shape the person she became.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hRmXUN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kim Lamont<\/a>, Supervisor of Drug Distribution in the Pharmacy Department, volunteers at Camp Smitty and the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa because she treasures her memories of going there as a child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis organization has helped shape the person I have become, as well as my success as an adult,\u201d Lamont said.<\/p>\n<p>And then there are those who worked at The Ottawa Hospital, but just couldn\u2019t stay away after they retired, including Jane Gordon and retired nurse <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hXD6Ys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ruth Gillespie<\/a>, who both volunteer at the Civic Campus Information desk.<\/p>\n<p>When nurse <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2hSyBB9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diane Day<\/a>&nbsp;had to take early retirement in 2005, she volunteered to organize the paperwork that has to be filled out when babies die.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2gZMoRJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Janet Eve<\/a> retired from the Finance Department after 50 years at TOH and now volunteers in surgical day care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI choose to give back because it keeps you involved with life and it feels good.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meet just some of the hundreds of The Ottawa Hospital staff members who volunteer because they want to help make life better for the people in their communities.
