{"id":1614,"date":"2012-05-16T15:44:03","date_gmt":"2012-05-16T19:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/52.229.122.34\/en\/?p=1614"},"modified":"2017-04-03T12:49:46","modified_gmt":"2017-04-03T16:49:46","slug":"5-west-general-campus-experiencing-outbreak-of-c-difficile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/newsroom\/5-west-general-campus-experiencing-outbreak-of-c-difficile\/","title":{"rendered":"5 West, General Campus experiencing outbreak of C. difficile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>May 16, 2012<\/strong> <strong>\u2013 <\/strong>The fifth case of C. <em>difficile<\/em> since April 13 has been identified today on 5 West at the General Campus, resulting in an outbreak being declared. \u00a0Ontario\u2019s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care defines an outbreak of C. <em>difficile<\/em> as:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor wards\/units with \u2265 20 beds, 3 cases of nosocomial CDI identified on one ward\/unit within a seven day period or 5 cases within a 4 week period\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To reduce the risk of spread of infection, strict measures have been implemented. Our health-care teams work hard to reduce the occurrence of hospital acquired infections and when cases are detected, special measures are put in place to reduce their spread.<\/p>\n<p>These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Isolating patients who have diarrhea\u00a0in private rooms when possible.<\/li>\n<li>Using a bleach solution to clean the environment.<\/li>\n<li>Auditing to ensure equipment and hands are cleaned between patients.<\/li>\n<li>Reminders to staff, patients and visitors that frequent hand washing, or use of alcohol-based hand rubs, is the best way to stop the infection.<\/li>\n<li>Preventing unnecessary traffic and congestion in the unit experiencing the outbreak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a visitor:<\/p>\n<p>Please do not visit friends or family in the hospital if you are unwell.
