Clear, plain, frequent communications.<\/p>\n<p>Of the five things we can do to make patients satisfied with their care, the top two involve communications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way nurses and doctors communicate is absolutely key,\u201d said Dr. Ginette Rodger, Senior Vice-President of Professional Practice and Chief Nursing Executive. \u201cFor example, anyone shall answer a call-bell and no patient or family should wait at the desk and be ignored.\u201d If nurses or clerks are busy, any staff member can respond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were avid listeners who took the time to \u2018really listen\u2019 to concerns, no matter how busy they were,\u201d said Paulette Diotte, the patient who nominated B2 General Surgery for the Team Nursing Award. \u201cThey always introduced themselves\u2026.They took time to explain procedures and treatments and rounded hourly, which was reassuring to me and my family. The care board in the room enabled me to remember the nurses\u2019 names, keep in touch with reality and reassure me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sometimes use doctor-speak,\u201d said Dr. Alison Dugan. \u201cI really try to speak in a language that can be understood by patients. I try not to use medical terminology.\u201d She said patients also need to feel that they\u2019ve been heard. \u201cI repeatedly ask \u2018Do you have any more questions?\u2019 so they feel there\u2019s time to ask and I\u2019m not trying to rush out of the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with communications, other factors that help satisfy patients include pain control, smooth transitions from one part of the hospital to another, and a quiet healing environment. TOH launched the \u201cGood night. Great care.\u201d campaign in December, with quiet hours announced from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. and tips for staff to reduce the noise overnight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yearly patient-satisfaction surveys are now required by the government. The latest survey shows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>79% of patients would recommend TOH<\/li>\n<li>46% of patients rate TOH as excellent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Communications.
