They organize the teaching schedules including scheduling residents, students and fellows in the clinic. They are the communication link between physicians, patients and other health-care professionals.

Clerical Team

The clerks work at our front desk. They answer your phone calls, greet you when you arrive, and book your follow-up appointments and tests ordered by your doctor. The clerks answer your questions and direct you to other team members as necessary.

Endocrinologists

Our physicians are specialists in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism. They are medical doctors who have done further training in diseases affecting the endocrine system. The endocrine system involves hormones such as insulin and diseases such as diabetes. These physicians will diagnose and treat your endocrine and metabolic disorders and may also refer you to other physicians and services as required. They will help you understand your disease and provide you with support for dealing with it.

Registered Dietitians

Registered Dietitians are the most knowledgeable when it comes to advice about your nutrition. In Canada, a person must have official certification and the appropriate credentials to be called a “registered dietitian”. Our Registered Dietitians work with patients in the diabetes and lipid clinics. Their role is to help you take charge of your nutrition while living with your condition. Working with you, they can develop a plan that fits with your lifestyle and supports your special ethnic, cultural, and religious needs.

Registered Nurses

Our registered nurses are known as Diabetes Nurse Educators because they specialize in diabetes care and education. As part of the diabetes health-care team their role is to explore what it means to live with diabetes for you and your family. The nurses will assess your individual learning needs and personal goals for managing diabetes. They will offer you current information and resources and will help you develop problem solving skills to successfully manage your diabetes on your own terms.

Registered Practical Nurses

Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) are community college graduates who have successfully completed a national exam to become registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario. In our centre, the Registered Practical Nurse may carry out a short assessment which may include measurements of blood pressure and pulse, height, weight, body mass index and waist circumference. They may ask you questions about your condition and medications to prepare you for the visit with your doctor.

Research Coordinators

The research coordinators manage the many research projects at our centre. They may be trained as a registered nurse, a registered dietitian or an exercise physiologist. They work closely with your doctor and may approach you to participate in research studies that may be of interest to you. Participation is always completely voluntary and your participation does not affect the care you will receive at our centre. They can explain the various studies and answer any questions you may have.

Volunteers

The Ottawa Hospital volunteers are a very important part of our clinic. They greet you at the front desk when you arrive, provide general information about the hospital, give you assistance with directions to other departments, and accompany you or your family members to their destination.

Our team includes administrative staff, clerks, endocrinologists, registered dietitians, registered nurses, registered practical nurses, research coordinators, and volunteers.
