Patients referred to the unit may have undergone complicated joint-replacement procedures, back surgery, suffered mild strokes or been weakened by prolonged illness.<\/p>\n<h2>Our Services<\/h2>\n<p>The STRU helps patients set and achieve their goals, which may assist with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Daily-living activities (personal hygiene, dressing,\u00a0meal preparation, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Instrumental activities (banking, grocery shopping, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Mobility<\/li>\n<li>Endurance<\/li>\n<li>Speech difficulties<\/li>\n<li>Memory strategies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Our Team<\/h2>\n<p>Our dedicated team of specialists includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physiotherapists<\/li>\n<li>Occupational therapists<\/li>\n<li>Rehabilitation assistants<\/li>\n<li>Speech language pathologists<\/li>\n<li>Social workers<\/li>\n<li>Registered nurses<\/li>\n<li>Registered practical nurses<\/li>\n<li>Physiatrists (rehabilitation specialists)<\/li>\n<li>Family physicians<\/li>\n<li>Clinical manager<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Making an Appointment<\/h2>\n<p>Patients are referred to the unit by the physician or the medical team of an acute care unit at The Ottawa Hospital. Each referred patient undergoes an assessment by a highly trained rehabilitation nurse clinician to determine if the unit can help with their needs and attainment of rehabilitation goals. If so, this nurse will arrange for transfer to the STRU as soon as a bed becomes available.<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment<\/h2>\n<p>During your time at the STRU, you will work with a core team of at least four rehabilitation specialists to help you achieve your goals and successfully return to community-based living.<\/p>\n<p>However, you are the most important member of your rehabilitation team and will be expected to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do as much of your personal care as you are able to do.<\/li>\n<li>Have comfortable clothes &amp; non-slip shoes brought in for you.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in all of your scheduled therapies.<\/li>\n<li>Sign out when you leave the unit &amp; sign back in on return.<\/li>\n<li>Follow-up with your family doctor after discharge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Discharge\/Follow-up Treatment<\/h2>\n<p>During your stay, a discharge plan will be developed according to patient needs and goals to assist you in achieving community-based success while living with a physical disability. The most important people involved in planning for your discharge are you, your family members or close friends and all members of the rehabilitation team.
