The Short-Term Rehabilitation Unit (STRU) is an in-patient rehabilitation service that focuses on assessment and treatment of patients who require intensive, short-term (three weeks or less) rehabilitation, either post-surgery or illness to\u00a0improve their day-to day independence. Patients referred to the unit may have undergone complicated joint-replacement procedures, back surgery, suffered mild strokes or been weakened by prolonged illness.<\/p>\n

Patients are referred to the unit by the physician or the medical team of an acute care unit at The Ottawa Hospital. Each referred patient undergoes an assessment by a highly trained rehabilitation nurse clinician to determine if the unit can help with their needs and attainment of rehabilitation goals. If so, this nurse will arrange for transfer to the STRU as soon as a bed becomes available.<\/p>\n
During your time at the STRU, you will work with a core team of at least four rehabilitation specialists to help you achieve your goals and successfully return to community-based living.<\/p>\n
However, you are the most important member of your rehabilitation team and will be expected to:<\/p>\n
During your stay, a discharge plan will be developed according to patient needs and goals to assist you in achieving community-based success while living with a physical disability. The most important people involved in planning for your discharge are you, your family members or close friends and all members of the rehabilitation team. Other key participants are representatives from community agencies who will be arranging or providing services to you in the community.<\/p>\n
