Overview<\/h2>\n

The Behavioural Rehabilitation Service (BRS) is one part of the range of rehabilitation services offered by the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC). Individualized services are offered on both an inpatient and outreach basis. The program focuses on patients\u2019 strengths using a neurobehavioural approach. Direct observation of behaviour and input from family or significant others form the basis for assessment. The treatment program uses everyday activities and life skills teaching sessions as opportunities to establish skills and strengths and to minimize behaviours that interfere with activities and relationships.<\/p>\n

The BRS I<\/strong>npatient Program is designed for individuals who would further benefit from the structure provided in a controlled environment. The average stay in this program is six months. It has four-six beds and is located on the second floor of the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC) in Ward C.<\/p>\n

The BRS Outreach Program<\/strong> is designed for those individuals who do not need the structured environment and are able to gain control over behaviours in their own environment.<\/p>\n

Treatment is provided by an interdisciplinary team working together to help patients reach their goals. Patients work closely with a rehabilitation therapist who is under the supervision of the clinical psychologist and other professionals on the team.<\/p>\n

What Are The Goals Of The Behavioural Rehabilitation Service?<\/h3>\n

  • Assist patients to gain control over behavioural challenges associated with their brain injury.<\/li>\n
  • Help patients become more independent in the areas of employment, education, meaningful daily activities and relationships with family and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Our Services<\/h2>\n

    The Behavioural Rehabilitation Service provides client-focused assessment and treatment that involves patients, families and caregivers as rehabilitation partners. Services include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Initial assessment and ongoing support by a physiatrist (physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation)<\/li>\n
    • Discipline-specific assessment and therapies, including clinical nutrition, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech-language therapy, social work and\/or therapeutic recreation<\/li>\n
    • Neurocognitive rehabilitation<\/li>\n
    • Behavioural assessment and intervention<\/li>\n
    • Communication skills development<\/li>\n
    • Training and support with activities of daily living<\/li>\n
    • Recreational\/leisure skill development<\/li>\n
    • Psychosocial counselling<\/li>\n
    • Counselling and education about acquired brain injury for clients, families and caregivers<\/li>\n
    • Consultation, education and training support for community service providers<\/li>\n
    • Community-based rehabilitation provided by a rehabilitation therapist, under the direction of a regulated health professional<\/li>\n
    • Opportunities for the client to regain and maintain an optimal level of physical, cognitive and psychosocial independence based on patient and family focused rehabilitation goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      What Can You Expect?<\/h3>\n

      The Behavioural Rehabilitation Centre provides client-focused treatment that involves patients, families and caregivers as rehabilitation providers.<\/p>\n

      As a patient you will receive:<\/p>\n

      • Expertise and evidence-based treatment<\/li>\n
      • Support to be involved in treatment planning with the team, and your family.<\/li>\n
      • Updates from the team on your progress and plans to support you after discharge<\/li>\n
      • Reassessment to measure the improvements you have made<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The team encourages family members and significant others to be involved in the patients\u2019 rehabilitation to help them succeed. Team members offer education and support to patients\u2019 families and friends. They also welcome feedback about the services provided<\/p>\n

          Making an Appointment<\/h2>\n

          Referrals are accepted from hospitals, physicians, health care providers, family members, community services, and insurance companies. Self-referrals are also accepted. One a referral is received:<\/p>\n

            \n
          • The Acquired Brain Injury Admissions Coordinator reviews the referrals.<\/li>\n
          • The care stream physiatrist (doctor who specializes in rehabilitation) refers the patient to the most appropriate service or discipline(s).<\/li>\n
          • Patients are placed on a waiting list for admission.<\/li>\n
          • Patients are triaged (sorted) for admission considering when they were referred, level of urgency, readiness and the services they require.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            • Leeds and Grenville<\/li>\n
            • Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry<\/li>\n

            • Western Quebec (inpatient treatment only)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Please note<\/strong>: Community-based services are limited to the counties listed. People from other areas will be considered for admission to inpatient services.<\/p>\n
