{"id":12571,"date":"2016-12-02T13:02:38","date_gmt":"2016-12-02T18:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/52.229.122.34\/en\/?page_id=12571"},"modified":"2021-03-09T11:47:22","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T16:47:22","slug":"occupational-therapist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/clinical-services\/deptpgrmcs\/departments\/rehabilitation-centre\/about-the-rehabilitation-centre\/our-rehabilitation-teams\/occupational-therapist\/","title":{"rendered":"Occupational Therapist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright img-responsive\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/OccupationalTherapy2.jpg\" alt=\"Occupational Therapy\" width=\"448\" height=\"248\" \/>The <strong>Occupational Therapist (OT) <\/strong>helps you learn to become as independent as possible in activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, transfers, mobility and homemaking. \u00a0Assistive devices (such as a bath seat, reacher, rocker knife, splints) and home accessibility may be investigated.\u00a0 An assessment of posture and mobility with the prescription of a wheelchair with appropriate seating may be provided.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Occupational therapy within rehabilitation<\/strong> involves the assessment, treatment and education of patients with complex physical, cognitive and behavioural needs whose needs cannot be met by the services available in the community.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In- and outpatient services <\/strong>are provided to patients with orthopedic, neurological, respiratory, cognitive and behavioural disorders, and are directed toward the prevention and alleviation of dysfunction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Therapy<\/strong> is provided to relieve pain, strengthen muscles, improve joint mobility and range of motion, to enhance cognitive-thinking skills and to improve overall function in order to allow the individual to engage in all those daily activities that are important to him or her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Clinical Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our Occupational Therapy services include the assessment and treatment of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Daily-living activities as well as prescribing specialized equipment in order to promote function and independence<\/li>\n<li>Assistance with home accessibility and safety when related to complex physical needs, as well as the provision of specialized equipment (as part of inpatient discharge planning)\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irrd.ca\/education\/presentation.asp?refname=e4w1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.irrd.ca\/education\/presentation.asp?refname=e4w1<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Assistance with use of technology to allow independence at home<\/li>\n<li>Assistance with wheelchair use, seating and mobility for those with complex physical needs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irrd.ca\/education\/presentation.asp?refname=e1b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.irrd.ca\/education\/presentation.asp?refname=e1b1<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Assistance with the Assistive Devices Program (ADP), which provides support and funding to Ontario residents who have long-term physical disabilities and provides access to personalized assistive devices\u00a0 <em>\u00a0 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/english\/public\/program\/adp\/adp_mn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/english\/public\/program\/adp\/adp_mn.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Cognitive and perceptual retraining<\/li>\n<li>Hand therapy; static and dynamic splinting<\/li>\n<li>Upper extremity prosthetic assessment and training (authorized ADP clinic for conventional and power-operated prosthetics)<\/li>\n<li>Care for extensive burns and fitting for pressure garments (authorized ADP burn clinic)<\/li>\n<li>Augmentative communication (authorized ADP expanded level communication clinic).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irrd.ca\/education\/presentation.asp?refname=e4e1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Energy conservation and pacing strategies<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Pain management<\/li>\n<li>Driving rehabilitation specialists<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Occupational Therapy Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Occupational therapists participate in variety of research and quality improvement projects within the institution and as members of provincial health-care projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Occupational Therapy Training<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Occupational therapists are university graduates of recognized university-based occupational therapy programs and are licensed by the College of Occupational Therapy of Ontario to practice occupational therapy in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Occupational therapists must graduate with an entry-level Master\u2019s degree from an occupational therapy program of an accredited Canadian university after a minimum of four years undergraduate academic training.
