The assessment phase for an inpatient stay can take anywhere from three days to one week.<\/p>\n<p>During the assessment, the following areas will are examined:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overall medical condition and health status, including pain and skin integrity<\/li>\n<li>Mobility, including transfers, walking and wheelchair use<\/li>\n<li>Ability for self-care, including dressing, washing, bowel and bladder management, eating and grooming<\/li>\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n<li>Cognition<\/li>\n<li>Nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Social history<\/li>\n<li>Transportation and home accessibility<\/li>\n<li>Recreation and vocational interests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on this assessment, the team, in collaboration with the patient, will develop patient-specific goals to allow for achievement of the maximum level of independence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prior to admission, patients are assessed by a physiatrist (doctor who specializes in rehabilitation) who conducts a physical examination and asks questions about the patient\u2019s current situation.
