{"id":12019,"date":"2016-12-01T13:44:44","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T18:44:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/52.229.122.34\/en\/?page_id=12019"},"modified":"2026-03-04T10:22:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T15:22:49","slug":"pharmacy-residency-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ottawahospital.on.ca\/en\/clinical-services\/deptpgrmcs\/departments\/pharmacy\/pharmacy-residency-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacy Residency Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Ottawa Hospital &amp; H\u00f4pital Montfort Joint Pharmacy Residency Program<\/h2>\n<h3>Organization<\/h3>\n<h4>The Ottawa Hospital<\/h4>\n<p>The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) was created in 1998 from the amalgamation of the Civic, General, Riverside, and Grace hospitals.\u00a0 It is now comprised of the Civic Campus, General Campus, Heart Institute, Regional Cancer Centers, Rehabilitation Centre, and the Riverside Campus.\u00a0 The Ottawa hospital is an 1150-bed tertiary care academic institution and is affiliated with the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.\u00a0 It provides bilingual services to over 1.5 million residents in Eastern and Northeastern Ontario.\u00a0 It also provides clinical education to students in all health professional disciplines as well as post-graduate education to both Canadian and international professionals.<\/p>\n<h4>H\u00f4pital Montfort<\/h4>\n<p>Founded in 1953, H\u00f4pital Montfort, is a francophone institution located in the east end of Ottawa. This 300-bed community teaching hospital offers a wide-range and high quality of services. Montfort provides a variety of learning opportunities to students and residents of several disciplines. Overall, Montfort offers education, research and patient-centered care guided by compassion, respect, mutual support, excellence and accountability.<\/p>\n<h3>Program Description<\/h3>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\">\n<table class=\"table\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\"><strong>Type<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"482\">General (Year 1) Pharmacy Residency (see <a href=\"https:\/\/cshp-scph.ca\/cprb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSHP website<span class=\" sr-only\">(opens in a new tab)<\/span><\/a> for more details regarding Year 1 programs) Original program established in 1972. The Ottawa Hospital &amp; H\u00f4pital Montfort Joint program was established in 2012<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\"><strong>Accreditation<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"482\">The Canadian Pharmacy Residency Board (CPRB) awarded the TOH\/Montfort Joint program at their last survey visit in 2015.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\"><strong>Number of\u00a0positions <\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"482\">The residency program offers five positions annually. TOH offers four positions and Montfort offers 1 position.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\"><strong>Estimated stipend<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"482\">$30,000 annually<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\"><strong>Start date<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"482\">The program has two start dates: July or September<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"160\"><strong>Vacation <\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"482\">2 weeks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Residents Training Overview<\/h3>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\">\n<table class=\"table\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\">\n<p><strong>Clinical and Kinetic Orientation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interpretation of serum concentrations for common drugs, patient\/pharmacist communications, overview of pharmacy care plans, pharmacy interventions, therapeutic workshops, toxicology training, documentation of pharmaceutical care plans and drug literature evaluation.<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">3 weeks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\">\n<p><strong>Distribution:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Exposure and review of inventory control, narcotic control and packaging, unit dose packaging and processing, drug order review, cardstock, non\u2011sterile manufacturing, parenteral nutrition, antineoplastic preparation, sterile manufacturing, and EPIC training<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">3 weeks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\">\n<p><strong>Administration:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>purchasing, interdepartmental communications, committees, personnel management, planning, finances, and project<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">1 week<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\"><strong>Drug Information Centre:<\/strong>physician\/nurse\/ward pharmacist communications, searches, drug literature evaluation, newsletters, retrieval systems, regional drug information service<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">3 weeks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\">\n<p><strong>Clinical Service Rotations: <\/strong>Each rotation is 4 weeks in duration unless otherwise indicated<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mandatory Rotations<\/strong>: General Medicine (5 + 2 weeks), Infectious Diseases, and Intensive Care<\/p>\n<p><strong>TWO selective rotations: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cardiology OR Nephrology<\/li>\n<li>Medical Oncology OR Hematology OR Hematology\/Medical Day Care Unit OR Hematology\/Bone Marrow Transplantation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>TWO elective rotations which may include: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Immunodeficiency clinic, Mental Health, Neonatal Intensive Care, Neurology, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Orthopedic surgery, Vascular surgery, Palliative Care (Bruyere Continuing Care), Montfort Hospital &#8211; Intensive Care, cardiology, mental health (if French speaking)<\/p>\n<p>*The Teaching\/Preceptorship Rotation takes place during one clinical service rotation which is extended from a 4-week rotation to a 5-week rotation.\u00a0The pharmacy resident will be precepting a pharmacy student during this rotation.<\/p>\n<p>*The Montfort resident will ideally spend 32 weeks of the program at the H\u00f4pital Montfort, and the balance of their weeks at either campus of TOH<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">31 weeks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\">\n<p><strong>Project:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clinical research looking at specific or general drug use, efficacy or toxicity that exposes the resident to research methodology, evaluation of data and preparation of a written manuscript.\u00a0 The project may also encompass a different area of hospital pharmacy practice, such as pharmacy administration or may include a systematic review of evidence.<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">8 weeks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\">\n<p><strong>Continuing Education:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to attending an external pharmacy meeting, the resident routinely participates in the internal pharmacy educational program, grand medical rounds, clinical toxicology sessions, journal clubs, as well as other lectures and rounds related to drug therapy.<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">1 week<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"501\">\n<p><strong>On-call Clinical Toxicology Service:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The residents provide on-call service to The Ottawa Hospital General Campus, assisting 24 hours per day in the management of poisonings and drug toxicities presenting to the hospital.\u00a0 The responsibility for the service is assigned among the residents.<\/td>\n<td width=\"123\">52 weeks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Program Highlights<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Pharmacists specializing in the relevant fields assume the role of preceptors.\u00a0Over 90%\u00a0of our pharmacists have completed a hospital pharmacy residency program and many of them have advanced clinical practice degrees.\u00a0The preceptors are the pillars of our program.<\/li>\n<li>Unique learning and leadership opportunity provided by participation in the 24\/7 on-call clinical toxicology program. Since being established in 1972 the program has been dedicated and enthusiastic about finding ways to improve the program on an ongoing basis.<\/li>\n<li>Administrative team committed to providing a supportive and positive learning environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Application Details<\/h3>\n<h4>Applicant Prerequisites:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree<\/li>\n<li>Eligible for licensure within Canada<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Application Process:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Applications should be submitted through the Pharmacy Residency Application and Matching Service (PRAMS) with supplemental information submitted as per directions on the CPRB \/ PRAMS website.<\/li>\n<li>After careful review of the PRAMS applications we will invite several candidates for an interview with a panel led by the Residency Coordinators.<\/li>\n<li>Please note that applicants interested in the Montfort program need to have a functional ability to understand and speak French.
