The first year consists of a structured year of clinical rotations. The second year can be individualized to meet the needs of the trainee and their intended field of practice. Examples of electives for the second year include clinical research, basic research, community nephrology, hypertension, longitudinal satellite dialysis, progressive renal insufficiency, and pediatric nephrology. Each fellow has their own longitudinal fellows’ clinic once weekly for the duration of their training.

Faculty

The strength of our program comes from our faculty. Our division is comprised of 20 nephrologists. Our faculty has expertise in clinical epidemiology, basic science, translational research, and medical education.

Affiliated Hospitals and Programs

The Ottawa Hospital – Civic Campus has an active consult service and a 22-station hemodialysis unit. Patients at the Heart Institute have access to both services. The General Campus has a 25-bed nephrology clinical teaching unit, a 32-station hemodialysis unit, and an active consult service. The Riverside Campus is the location of our general nephrology, transplant, hypertension, progressive renal insufficiency clinics as well as 32-station hemodialysis unit and home dialysis unit.

Teaching

In addition to rotation specific teaching from our award-winning faculty, our program has a well-established core curriculum of teaching sessions that include:

Clinical case discussion

Evidence-based nephrology rounds

Fellows Rounds

Journal Club

Nephrology Grand Rounds

Pathology Rounds

Post fellows’ clinic discussion

Research

The Division of Nephrology has both clinical and basic science investigators with opportunities to do research at the bench and the bedside. The Kidney Research Centre is the first of its kind in Canada with laboratories specializing in models of diabetes mellitus, FSGS, and HTN. Clinical research, physiological and epidemiological is focused on several major areas of nephrology including hypertension, chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation.

Our investigators are funded by CIHR, Heart and Stroke and the Kidney Foundation. Trainees can pursue additional research experience with local and national funding opportunities.

Contact Us

Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information about the program.

Royal College Program Director: Dr. Mohan Biyani

Clinical Fellowship Director: Dr. Mohan Biyani

Education Coordinator: Ms. Lesli Ransome

Mission Our Mission is to prepare future nephrologists to care for the renal patient with expertise and compassion.
