Thank you.<\/p>\n<h2>Upcoming Events<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"https:\/\/www.traumacanada.org\/meetings_events\/meetings_events.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.traumacanada.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trauma Association of Canada &#8211; Meetings and Events<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Ottawa Trauma Conference<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Next conference date: to be determined<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact<\/strong>: Continuing Professional Development group\u00a0at <a href=\"mailto:continuingmedicaled@toh.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">continuingmedicaled@toh.ca<\/a> or by phone at 613-761-4480 ext.\u00a01 for general inquiries and requests to be part of the distribution list.<\/p>\n<h2>Courses<\/h2>\n<h3>ATCN &#8211; Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses<\/h3>\n<p>Next course dates: to be determined<\/p>\n<p>Please note the spaces are limited to 16 attendees per course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact<\/strong>:<br \/>\nQuestions about course content:\u00a0please contact the Cari Poulin at <a href=\"mailto:cpoulin@toh.ca\">cpoulin@toh.ca<\/a>.<br \/>\nDistribution list:\u00a0please contact the Trauma Office at <a href=\"mailto:trauma@toh.ca\">trauma@toh.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) course is taught concurrently with approved Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits of the ATCN course include an educational, team building, collaborative and synchronized approach to trauma care as trauma nurses share didactic lectures with the physician attendees of the ATLS course.\u00a0 Doctors and nurses\u00a0caring for trauma patients have the opportunity to share a common language and approach to trauma care.\u00a0 When the ATLS attendees break out for physician skill stations, the ATCN nurses join small group trauma nursing skill stations.<\/p>\n<p>These ATCN skill stations are based on an interactive \u201chands-on\u201d scenario-based approach to adult education.\u00a0 ATCN students are given both the ATLS student manual and the ATCN student manual.\u00a0 The ATCN course was developed in\u00a0response to a need for advanced trauma education for nurses.\u00a0 The ATCN course has been operational for over twenty years and is under the auspices of the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN).\u00a0 STN is a professional, international nursing organization that spans the continuum of trauma care.<\/p>\n<p>Upon successful completion of this program, the nurse will be able to:<br \/>\n1) Demonstrate concepts and principals of primary and secondary patient assessment.<br \/>\n2) Establish management priorities in a trauma situation.<br \/>\n3) Demonstrate the management priorities of the multiply traumatized patients.<\/p>\n<h3>ATLS &#8211; Advanced Trauma Life Support<\/h3>\n<p>Provider course 10th ed. If it has been expired more than 6 months you are required to take the full provider course.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to take the course elsewhere you can search on the other <a href=\"https:\/\/web2.facs.org\/atls\/existing.htm\">Canadian sites<\/a> that offer this course.<\/p>\n<h3>STOP-THE-BLEED\u00ae<\/h3>\n<p>Next course dates: to be determined<\/p>\n<p>STOP-THE-BLEED\u00ae Courses are designed to increase the survivability of life-threatening bleeding. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding, typically within 5-10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The concept of this course can be summed up in 3 points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lifesaving training: similar to how the general public understands and performs CPR<\/li>\n<li>The public must learn proper bleeding control techniques, including how to use their hands, dressings, and tourniquets<\/li>\n<li>By providing civilian bystanders the skills and basic tools to stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency situation, lives would be saved!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This complimentary course offered by the Ottawa Regional Trauma Program takes about 90 minutes to deliver and includes hands-on skills development.<\/p>\n<p>The training occurs The Ottawa Hospital-Civic Campus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">STOP-THE-BLEED\u00ae is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Defense. The TNCC is a 16-hour course designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills to better assess and treat the pediatric or adult trauma patient. This course includes lecture and hands-on skill stations covering assessment and treatment of the severely injured patient. This certification is valid for four years and successful completion of the TNCC course includes passing a multiple-choice examination and demonstrating critical steps of the skill stations. Recommended for emergency room and intensive care unit floor nurses.
