The Ottawa Hospital partners with Extendicare to create innovative solutions for improved patient care

The Ottawa Hospital has partnered with Extendicare to create a collaborative care model that will provide the most appropriate care to patients in our community. The hospital will manage an Off-Site Transitional Care Unit at West End Villa in Ottawa. Opening the first week of May, the 55-bed unit will be a place for patients to transition from hospital care to long-term care or other care in the community.

This partnership will ensure that patients throughout the community have access to high-quality and timely care, and create additional capacity in hospitals to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate care for their specific needs. The unit will serve Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patients, who no longer require acute level hospital care, while continuing to meet the needs of long-term care residents.

“Hospitals and long-term care homes have worked closely together throughout the pandemic, to ensure that all residents in our community have access to the care they need,” said Cameron Love, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital. “While in the early days of the pandemic, health-care workers supported long-term care homes in need, now long-term care homes are supporting hospitals and helping us create care capacity for the most acutely ill. This is a partnership that we can build on going forward, creating more opportunities for collaborative care models in the future.”

All the same infection prevention and control protocols followed in hospitals will be applied to this unit, in order to ensure the safety of patients, staff and residents.
