Each Nursing Week, the Nursing Week Work Group, in collaboration with the Social Work Department, chooses a community organization that serves our patient population and those in need. This year we are pleased to recognize and support Nelson House of Ottawa Carleton.
What they do: Nelson House is a non-profit shelter that provides safety for women and children who are being abused while working towards ending violence against women. Its Crisis Line answers more than 1,500 calls annually and Nelson House provides emergency shelter in a 15-bed residence for up to 10 weeks. On average, 150 women and their children seek emergency shelter at Nelson House every year. Nelson House provides information on safety planning, access to community services, and a safe place to stay. They facilitate access and referrals to other services like financial support, counseling, housing, and medical and legal services. Their Children’s Program provides parenting support, respite care and activities for children. Transitional support workers ensure women are connected to community services for continuing support before they leave Nelson House.
How we can help: Awareness is the first step. Spread the word to colleagues! Donations of the following items for women and children are appreciated.

- Food items: canned protein (tuna, chicken breast, salmon, ham), rice, quinoa, couscous, barley, whole grain pasta, flour, yeast, baking supplies, sugar and sugar alternatives, canned tomatoes and other vegetables, soup, chilli, stew, grocery gift cards or grocery vouchers
