A 99-year lease for the new hospital campus: A milestone for health-care in Eastern Ontario

OTTAWA – Feb. 23, 2018 – The 99-year lease signed today by the federal government and The Ottawa Hospital regarding the future site of the new campus of The Ottawa Hospital is an important milestone. It reflects the commitment by all levels of government to build a 21st-century hospital for the citizens of the Ottawa region.

“Together with the three levels of government and our community, we will plan and build a world-class health-care facility that will ensure future generations receive state-of-the-art care,” said Katherine Cotton, Chair of the Board of Governors for The Ottawa Hospital. “Thank you to our partners in the federal government for their collaboration on this vital addition to eastern Ontario’s health system.”

“We’re taking an important first step in creating a new campus for the The Ottawa Hospital,” said hospital President and Chief Executive Dr. Jack Kitts. “Today, the rare opportunity to build a brand new, state-of-the-art health and research facility in our nation’s capital is before us. The new campus of The Ottawa Hospital will have a bigger impact on our community’s health than any of us can imagine.”

On Jan. 31, a test-fit draft concept was presented to the community, following feedback from a series of public information sessions. Over the next three years, the hospital’s Board of Governors will work with a community engagement group to deliberate on a range of questions and issues related to the community. That group will also be informed by feedback from continuing public information sessions held in person and online.

“The new campus will be a cornerstone of essential infrastructure to create and maintain a vibrant community in the future. It is a very exciting time for the citizens of the Ottawa region and we look forward to working together to build the future health-care system,” Cotton noted.
