Rock star researcher uses big data to answer big questions

Sarah Aly is a volunteer in the hemodialysis unit at The Ottawa Hospital. When colleagues saw her dedication, hard work and bond with her patients, they nominated her for a Human Touch Award. She thought it was a joke – until she won.

Hospital Gala honoured top researchers
The Ottawa Hospital’s top three researchers were applauded for their achievements in their respective fields at the annual Gala, on Oct. 26. Faizan Khan received the Worton Researcher in Training Award, Dr. Marjorie Brand received the Chrétien Researcher of the Year Award, and Dr. Paul Albert received the Grimes Research Career Achievement Award.

Patient uses Guardian Angel Program to honour extraordinary porter
Michel “Mike” Mongeon has been a porter at The Ottawa Hospital for 12 years, but he has been making people laugh and feel at ease his entire life. He was awarded a Guardian Angel pin on behalf of a patient for going above and beyond to provide exceptional care.

New Canadians find meaningful employment at The Ottawa Hospital
Iuliana Popescu came to Canada from Romania in 2002, and began working in the Human Resources Department at The Ottawa Hospital five years later. No matter where her travels took her, she always felt a sense of belonging here. The Ottawa Hospital was recently recognized for helping new Canadians like Iuliana find meaningful employment.

Living organ donors honoured in ceremony
The Ottawa Hospital and the Trillium Gift of Life Network honoured 28 living organ donors at a ceremony on Oct. 30, 2018. Living donors and recipients shared their touching stories about how organ donation has changed their lives.
