Our two-year Vascular Surgery Residency Program is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and is also recognized internationally as an approved training in vascular surgery. If you have Royal College certification in general surgery and have completed the requirements for training, you are eligible for examinations leading to the Certificate of Special Competence in Vascular Surgery.

First, however, you are required to complete an additional 24-month training period as a chief resident in a vascular unit, provided your general surgery training included the following elements:

I. Fifteen months of senior residency in vascular surgery. Senior residency is defined as a period of time during which the resident is regularly entrusted with responsibility for pre- operative, operative and post-operative care, including the most difficult problems in vascular surgery. The senior resident shall be in charge of a vascular service. No other resident shall interfere between the senior resident and the attending staff person.

II. Nine months of residency in vascular surgery that may include the following rotations:

• Three to six months of cardiac surgery in a cardiac surgery program approved by the Royal College;
• Three to six months of thoracic surgery in a thoracic surgery program approved by the Royal College;
• Up to nine months of research, provided that the research project is approved by the vascular surgery residency program director before the research is undertaken;
• Further senior residency in clinical vascular surgery in a program approved by the Royal College for training in vascular surgery;
• Other rotations approved in advance by the vascular surgery residency program director.

Chief residents in vascular surgery are responsible for a dedicated vascular unit under the supervision of staff surgeons in that discipline. Rotations at The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus make up your chief residency year. During that time, you will be exposed to all aspects of clinical vascular surgery, including non-invasive laboratory and angiographic studies, patient selection and treatment.

In addition to clinical duties, as chief resident you administer the service, including supervising junior residents and medical students and taking part in their teaching program. There is also ample opportunity to do clinical or basic-science research, and basic laboratory facilities are at your disposal. We also have a fully accredited blood-flow laboratory.

Residents will have the option of writing the Registered Vascular Technologist exam at the end of training. Furthermore, residents may gain experience in our endovascular program for repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
