The Locomotor Outpatient Group provides clinical assessment, treatment and education to clients who have physical impairments, particularly complex pain and musculoskeletal problems, with the purpose of maximizing their level of independent functioning. Patients have access to a variety of health-care professionals, providing a holistic approach for optimal individualized care.

Specifically, we seek to:

  • Strive to provide the best quality care that we would want for our families, based on evidence-supported scientific practices
  • Collaborate with community partners to enhance the quality of life of our clients
  • Advocate for our clients’ needs both internally and externally.
  • Promote research, education and development, including participation in student supervision and academic teaching

The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC) can address a range of issues through our Locomotor Outpatient Group, including:

  • Medical rehabilitation consultation
  • Pain and pain management
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Physical functioning
  • Vocational functioning
  • Daily-living activities, including:
    • Mobility issues
    • Personal care
    • Nutritional issues
    • Recreation concerns
    • Emotional or adjustment difficulties

We utilize an interdisciplinary team approach that is client-centred. Our dedicated team includes members from the following disciplines:

  • Clinical nutrition

  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Vocational rehabilitation

Making an Appointment

Our services are available to patients 18 years of age and older who have been referred by a physician. We serve residents in the Ottawa/Gatineau region and residents of eastern and northeastern Ontario.

Specifically, we treat:Clinical Process

  • Patients must first obtain a referral to The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC) from their physician.
  • Eligible patients are scheduled for consultation with a physiatrist and/or other team members in order to assess their condition and set achievable goals; they will be referred to the various disciplines within the centre as appropriate.
  • Patients receive treatment, education and counselling at TOHRC according to need, on an individual basis or in groups.
  • We link with community organizations and agencies to help ensure that clients continue to maintain and optimize their level of function and independence.
