Overview

The Behavioural Rehabilitation Service (BRS) is one part of the range of rehabilitation services offered by the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC). Individualized services are offered on both an inpatient and outreach basis. The program focuses on patients’ strengths using a neurobehavioural approach. Direct observation of behaviour and input from family or significant others form the basis for assessment. The treatment program uses everyday activities and life skills teaching sessions as opportunities to establish skills and strengths and to minimize behaviours that interfere with activities and relationships.

The BRS Inpatient Program is designed for individuals who would further benefit from the structure provided in a controlled environment. The average stay in this program is six months. It has four-six beds and is located on the second floor of the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC) in Ward C.

The BRS Outreach Program is designed for those individuals who do not need the structured environment and are able to gain control over behaviours in their own environment.

Treatment is provided by an interdisciplinary team working together to help patients reach their goals. Patients work closely with a rehabilitation therapist who is under the supervision of the clinical psychologist and other professionals on the team.
