The Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Inpatient Service is a structured eight-bed inpatient program focused on improving and helping patients manage difficulties in thinking skills, including memory, attention, learning, planning and problem solving. Patients also learn strategies to compensate for their difficulties, with the overall goal of helping patients return to the community with the support needed.

Our Services

The ABI Inpatient Service provides client-focused assessment and treatment that involves patients, families and caregivers as rehabilitation partners. We strive to make patients as independent as possible, based on their own goals and those of their families.

Our Team

The expertise of our dedicated interdisciplinary team includes:

  • Clinical nutrition
  • Clinical pharmacy
  • Nursing
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Physiatry
  • Psychology
  • Social work
  • Speech-language pathology
  • Therapeutic recreation

The team encourages family members and significant others to be involved in patient rehabilitation as a means of success. Our team members offer education and support to patients’ families and friends, and also welcome feedback about the services provided.

The Ontario Ministry of Health funds The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, and there is no cost for standard care and equipment.

Patient Resources

Making an Appointment

Referrals are accepted from hospitals, physicians, health-care providers, family members, community services and insurance companies. We also accept self-referrals.

Once a referral is received:

  • The ABI admissions coordinator reviews the referral
  • The care stream physiatrist (doctor who specializes in rehabilitation) refers the patient to the most appropriate service or discipline(s)
  • Patients are placed on a waiting list for admission
  • Patients are triaged for admission based on their referral timeline, level of urgency, readiness and services required

We accept referrals from the counties of:

  • Renfrew
  • Lanark
  • Leeds and Grenville
  • Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry
  • Prescott and Russell
  • Ottawa Carleton
  • Western Quebec (inpatient treatment only)

Please note: While community-based services are limited to the counties listed, people from other areas will be considered for admission to inpatient services.
