The Ottawa Hospital is prepared for Ebola, thanks to our 750-member response team

March 4, 2015 – The Ottawa Hospital’s Board of Governors today recognized the 750 staff and physicians who have trained diligently over the past six months to respond to potential cases of Ebola virus disease.

“This hospital has one of the largest cohorts of trained Ebola responders in Ontario,” said James McCracken, Chair of the Board. “The dedication of this response team shows that this hospital is there for our community when it matters most.”

All members of the response team have trained regularly on how to safely put on and take off their protective gear. They have also participated in regular drills and simulation training that prepares them to respond rapidly to potential cases.

“The training program has worked extremely well,” said Cameron Love, the hospital’s Chief Operating Officer. “In the coming months, we will work with this team of staff and physicians to continue to refresh and update their training.”

While there have been no reported cases of Ebola virus disease in Canada, the hospital is working closely with Ottawa Public Health and other health-care providers in the community to be ready to respond should an ill patient report that they have travelled to a country where an Ebola outbreak has been declared.

The hospital’s General Campus is one of four provincial centres designated to treat potential cases.
