Medical Education and Training Programs
Through its affiliation with the University of Ottawa and other regional colleges
and universities, the Eye Institute offers exceptional training opportunities
for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students.
The total patient care approach of the Eye Institute makes it an excellent facility for students in
the University of Ottawa’s Ophthalmology Residency Program. Throughout their five-year training,
residents are exposed to all aspects of ophthalmology practice, making them some of the best-rounded
practitioners in the world.
The University of Ottawa Eye Institute has been recognized as a world-class facility, which
offers highly specialized care to all sectors of the regional population. Students benefit from
the knowledge and experience of professors who are both researchers and practitioners.
In the context of clinical training, they come to master the advanced technologies that are
integral to the practice of modern medicine. Students also benefit from a heavy emphasis
on acquiring the interpersonal communication skills necessary to providing effective patient care, as well
as the collegiality among staff.
International Program
The Faculty is committed to improving ophthalmic care on an international scale and has trained many foreign medical
graduates at the Eye Institute. These physicians then return to their home countries to practice taking with them the
latest knowledge and expertise in ophthalmic care. Many become professors in their university's training programs and continue
for their residents many of the training techniques they learned as residents. In addition, Eye Institute staff travel worldwide
to give lectures and teach surgical techniques as part of our international continuing medical education activities.
