Patient Education Classes
We offer individual counselling by a diabetes educator (nurse and/or
dietitan). We also offer a variety of group classes to patients who are
being cared for by an endocrinologist at our centre. Discuss registering
for a class with any member of your team.
Type 1 Diabetes Education
This 2-day program is offered every two months on Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The program covers the following topics: introduction to diabetes, blood sugar monitoring, review
of medications, diet, exercise, preventing diabetes complications and coping with diabetes.
The program is taught by a nurse, dietitian, pharmacist and social worker.
Type 2 Diabetes Education
This 2-day program is offered twice a month on Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program covers
the following topics: introduction to diabetes, blood sugar monitoring, review of medications, diet, exercise,
preventing diabetes complications and coping with diabetes. The program is taught by a nurse, dietitian, pharmacist
and social worker.
Flexible Insulin Therapy (MDI)
This class, taught by a nurse, is offered twice a month on Tuesday afternoon
for one hour from 1 to 2 p.m. The class is designed to help people who
take insulin and who want to learn more about adjusting and matching insulin
to food, activity and exercise in order to have better blood sugar control.
This class is followed by the carb counting class. We suggest that you
take both classes.
Carbohydrate Counting
The" carb" counting class, taught by a dietitian, follows the MDI class
twice per month on Tuesday afternoon for 1.5 hours from 2 - 3:30 pm. This
interactive class will help participants to learn what foods affect their
blood sugars and insulin requirements. Methods to count the amount of carbohydrates in your
food and to adjust your insulin accordingly will be reviewed.
Living with Insulin
This 2-hour class, taught by a nurse, is offered once a month on Thursday
afternoon from 1 - 3 p.m. It is an interactive class designed for people
taking insulin who want to learn more about insulin, its actions and how
to adjust insulin daily and for special situations like sick days and
traveling. Information about insulin syringes, pens and pumps is also
provided.
Understanding Food and Blood Sugar
This 2-hour class, taught by a dietitian, is offered once per month on
Tuesday afternoon from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. This class will improve your understanding
of the relationship between food and blood sugars. Information about healthy
food choices, meal planning, reading food labels, planning snacks and
portion control will be discussed.
