Medical and Professional Education

The Foustanellas Endocrine and Diabetes Centre provides education at the local, provincial, national and international level for physicians-in-training, practicing physicians, nursing students, nurses, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, pharmacists and graduate students.

Endocrinology and Metabolism Training Program

The Endocrinology and Metabolism Training Program at the University of Ottawa/The Ottawa Hospital is designed to prepare residents for the broad practice of this subspecialty by providing excellent training in clinical and research endocrinology over a two year period.

It includes outpatient teaching clinics at Foustanellas Endrocrine and Diabetes Centre (FEDC) - Riverside Campus, along with inpatient coverage at the Civic and General campuses.

Other rotations include community endocrinology clinics, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for pediatric clinics, and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). Research may involve biomedical, clinical, health care services, or population health projects.

Residency Program

Medical Students
Electives for medical students facilitate learning as part of a team which includes staff endocrinologists, fellows, residents and diabetes educators. Students attend 3-4 endocrinology clinics per week at the FEDC as well as the inpatient consult service at the General or Civic campus.

Clinical Placements

Nurses
The Centre provides an outpatient clinic environment for clinical placement of Registered Practical Nursing Students from the College program. The students work closely with the RPN staff to develop their clinical skills. We also provide consolidation opportunity for university nursing students.

Dietitians
The Ottawa Hospital is affiliated with the University of Ottawa baccalaureate in Nutrition Sciences for clinical placement of nutrition students. Each year, students and dietetic interns work with dietitians to learn and practice their diabetes education and nutrition councelling skills.
