Supportive care services help
patients and their families
cope with their cancer experience during the
diagnostic, treatment, follow-up and palliative phase.

The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre offers the following
supportive care services:
Cancer Rehabilitation Program |
The Cancer Rehabilitation Program at the General Campus is open to Cancer Centre
patients and offers exercise training, education and group support. The Program also
conducts clinical trials on the health benefits of exercise for cancer patients. Referral by
the patient's oncologist (cancer doctor) is required.
Dietitians advise patients about dealing with eating and nutrition problems caused by
cancer and cancer treatment.

The Ninon Bourque
Patient Resource Library is dedicated to providing up to
date, reliable cancer information to patients and families. There are
over 1500 books, tapes, videos, etc. on cancer treatment, coping, nutrition,
etc and computer stations for searching for health information on the
Internet.
Social workers provide counseling to cancer patients and their families.
They also assist with practical issues such as referral to financial support
services, transportation, etc. As well as individual counseling, there
are several support groups offered throughout the year for patients and
families.
Social work services are available to all patients receiving treatment at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, as well as to their families.Patients
may be referred by their doctor or nurse, or may contact a social worker
directly.

Canadian Cancer Society volunteers provide support, comfort and information
to people receiving treatment at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre.
Volunteers also offer activities, information sessions and friendly visiting
to patients from outside Ottawa who are staying at the Maurice Grimes
Lodge.
