Heart Transplant Program
The
University of Ottawa Heart Institute Transplant Program was established
in 1984. Averaging 25 heart transplants a year, approximately 350 patients
have received transplants to date.
Referrals are received from all over the country for patients requiring
artificial devices. Three types of devices are used: the Jarvik (artificial
heart), the Novocor and Thoratec (Ventricular Assist Devices).
Patients are transplanted for end-stage heart failure due to ischemic heart
disease or cardiomyopathy (heart muscle dysfunction) related to viral
infection arising from other causes that could affect persons of all ages.
Highlights:
- First program in Canada to use the artificial heart (Jarvik) as a bridge to
transplant in 1986
- Youngest pediatric heart transplant (11 days old) in 1989
- Permanent artificial heart called the heart saver being developed along with
the World Heart Organization
Heart recipients have formed the Heart Transplant Association. This association
is very active in public awareness and fund raising. Recipients & spouses
can be involved in a "peer mentorship program", in which they meet
and support patients awaiting heart transplantation.
