| The MS clinic consists of a group of highly
trained individuals specializing in the care of patients with multiple
sclerosis. As such, the diagnosis should be confirmed as "definite" or "highly
probable", preferably by a neurologist before referral. Any of the neurologists
listed below could evaluate patients in whom the diagnosis is suspected
but not confirmed. The Director of the clinic is Dr. M. S. Freedman and
there are four neurologists who attend the clinic on a part-time basis:
Dr. F. Costello, Dr. C. DeMeulemeester, Dr. H. MacLean and Dr. Rabinovitch.
The Ottawa Hospital MS Clinic is an affiliate of the
Canadian Network of MS Clinics and is partially funded
by the MS Society of Canada-Ontario Division. The clinic
focuses primarily on patient care; however, is also
extensively involved in both clinical and basic science research
projects pertaining to MS.
When visiting the clinic, the patients will have access to a variety
of services in addition to the expert opinion and care of our neurologists.
A clinic nurse-coordinator works full-time along with a variety
of administrative staff and the assistance of a full-time specialized
therapeutics nurse who assists patients with all the new therapies.
In addition, the clinic has its own dedicated social worker.
Patient information booklets will be available to
you when you come for your appointment, however, if
you are looking for reliable and current information
about MS in general, we recommend that you consult
the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada's web site
at http://www.mssociety.ca.
