Description

The Women's Breast Health Centre (WBHC) is a regional program that provides a comprehensive service to people with breast abnormalities, and assists health professionals ensure a coordinated diagnostic work-up of breast problems.

The Women's Breast Health Centre performs over 17,000 procedures every year, including 1,600 breast biopsies. Approximately 35% of these biopsies are found to be positive for breast cancer.  Our health care team provides services for more than 1,300 new patients, sees 2,200 patients in follow-up clinics, and monitors over 500 individuals at high risk for breast cancer.

Our comprehensive program consists of three components:

  1. Diagnostic and supportive care that is provided by breast experts in a coordinated and compassionate manner, and consultation for women at a higher risk breast cancer development;
  2. Education for health professionals on breast health, assessment, and treatment;
  3. Research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast disease, and support of women and their families

Services include:

  • Diagnostic imaging (mammography, ultrasound, and core needle biopsy);
  • Breast cancer risk assessment;
  • Coordination of diagnostic services and presentation of necessary treatment options (assessment by a breast surgeon or family physician and a primary nurse);
  • Supportive care (information resources, practical guidance, emotional support, physical care)

These services are provided by a team of healthcare professionals that includes radiologists (doctors who specialize in diagnostic imaging), x-ray technologists, primary care nurses, an Advanced Practice Nurse, breast surgeons, and a social worker.
