Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)

Your physician has requested an exam called a Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD). This is a simple and painless way of measuring the amount of calcium in your bones using a computerized X-ray scanner. You do not need to be fasting. Please do not wear clothing with metal buttons, snaps or zippers. A sweat suit or similar outfit is ideal.

Go to the Radiology Department at the Riverside Campus on the main floor (turn left at the elevators and follow the signs to the Radiology reception).

What happens at this test?

You will remove your shoes and lie on a table with a foam cushion under your knees. The scanner will pass over your abdomen and measure the density of the bones in your lumbar spine. When this is complete, the technician will remove the cushion and secure your feet to a special brace in order to measure the density in one of your hips.

You will be asked to remain very still and breathe normally during the exam. The amount of radiation involved is less than half that of a chest X-ray and a small fraction of what you are exposed to from natural radiation in the environment each year.

The exam will take about 15-20 minutes.
