Library Services for Regional Hospitals
The Ottawa Hospital provides library services for any staff member affiliated with participating regional hospitals. Hospital staff are encouraged to call, email or fax the Regional Librarian with any request. All requests are processed promptly – usually within 24-48 hours. Among the many services we provide are the following:
Library Services offers access to many specialized databases, including Medline, The Cochrane Library, and CINAHL, and can perform literature searches to find articles and information on a wide variety of topics.
Literature searches are useful for:
- Finding research on any aspect of a specific disease or condition
- Finding the most up-to-date evidence-based information
- Finding information on current trends in health care, health policy, and health management
- Finding statistics collected by local, national and worldwide health agencies
Journal Articles
Library Services has access to thousands of journal titles. If we do not have the article you need in our collection, we will request it from another library and forward it to you. We have access to many journals dating back to the early 1990s, and even a small number of journals dating back to the 1980s.
There is no limit to the number of articles you can request.
Books
Books may be borrowed from Library Services for up to 2 weeks.
In the event that we do not have the book in our collection, and it must be obtained from another library, the loan period will depend upon the borrowing policies of that library.
Current Awareness Services
Our innovative electronic table-of-contents service allows you online access to the contents of any journals of your choice. The table-of-contents journal pages are tailored to your specific needs and interests. You will receive e-mail updates when new journal issues are released. You simply select articles of interest and forward your choices to library services. The articles are then sent directly to you. There is no limit to the number of articles you can request.
Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI)
This service is also tailored to the needs of each individual patron.
A unique search will be created by the Librarian to meet the specified needs of the client.
The search is then executed at a pre-determined interval (usually weekly or monthly) and the resulting list of citations is sent to the requestor. The requestor then simply selects any articles of interest and forwards these selections to the Librarian. In this way, you are able to keep up-to-date in any area of interest, without wasting precious time doing the searching yourself.
