These are devices that provide a new source of sound
for speaking after removal of the larynx. |
Augmentative Communication
An approach designed to supplement the communication of individuals
who cannot communicate vocally (i.e., voice output communication device). |
Cognitive Communication Skills
These include: focusing attention, recalling, organizing, reasoning, planning and problem solving.
Difficulties with these skills may affect any or all types of communication (listening, speaking, reading, writing and conversation). |
Communication Board
A series of pictures, words or other symbols that can be pointed
to in order to help with communication when speaking is a problem. |
Degenerative Disease
A progressive disease process that cannot be reversed. |
Fiberoptic Endoscope
An instrument made up of a bundle of fibers encased in tubing with
a camera on the end that can be inserted into the nose and passed
down the throat to view the larynx. |
Language
The interpretation or expression of thought via speech, writing,
reading or gesture. |
Laryngectomee
A person who has had a surgical removal of the larynx, most often
due to cancer. The trachea is attached to the midline of the neck
creating an opening (stoma) that leads directly to the lungs for
breathing. |
Larynx
Commonly referred to as the "voice box". The larynx is responsible
for protecting your airway when you swallow and for producing your
voice. |
Speech
The mechanical production of sounds, words, and sentences. |
Tracheotomy
A surgical creation of an opening in the trachea/windpipe. |
Videofluoroscopy
A test done in radiology, which can be used to assess
swallowing problems. The patient is asked to swallow liquids and/or
solids containing a small amount of barium. The path of barium can
be viewed on a video monitor and analyzed. |
