Quality Improvements In The Management
Of Fibroid Lesions of the Uterus
Recently The Ottawa Hospital’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology
and Newborn Care and the Department of Diagnostic Imaging worked together
to complete an analysis of the systems related to the detection, tracking
and management of uterine problems. The review included an internal analysis
of all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with uterine
fibroids as well as the canvassing of several facilities across Canada
which perform Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE). UEA is a procedure used
to treat symptomatic fibroids and works by blocking the blood flow to
these fibroids. The Uterine Artery Embolization program initiated in 1998
at The Ottawa Hospital was one of the first in Canada and is a benchmark
to other programs. As with any quality review, the goal was to look at
best practices and to identify changes for improved quality of care.
As a result of this review a number of changes have been made involving
both departments. Mapping and tracking of lesions, cysts or swellings,
now includes a diagram that is scanned into the imaging system. As a result,
the locations of lesions can more easily be reconfirmed on each visit.
A comprehensive requisition form is used to facilitate the sharing of
information between caregivers. An enhanced consultation process has been
developed to assist and facilitate communication between specialists.
As well, a checklist was updated to assist physicians in follow-up of
UAE patients. Patients will also have access to this checklist which is
in addition to the information booklet which has been available for several
years.
The changes made by the hospital will enhance the quality of care provided
to women experiencing uterine fibroids and treatment and will facilitate
early diagnosis should the patient develop a further pathology. We would
like to thank all who participated in identifying new approaches and ensuring
that they have been implemented.
