The Aggerwal Family - 2003
When Sumeetu Aggerwal awoke on September 18, 2003,
she knew things weren’t right.
The special multi-birth prenatal classes she and husband, Sandeep, were attending at The Ottawa Hospital had
taught them to watch for warning signs.
At 33 weeks pregnant, the first-time mother-to-be found herself at The Ottawa Hospital, scared and concerned about the
future of her unborn twins.
Fears were soon relieved as a team of highly skilled professionals went into action, working
together to diagnose Sumeetu’s condition and determine the best treatment.
Short hours later, Sumeetu underwent an emergency
caesarean section, and gave birth to premature twins Sachin and Salena.
When Sumeetu was released from the hospital two days later, the twins remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) under
the watchful eye of the physicians and nurses. Sumeetu and Sandeep agonized over leaving their son and daughter; however, the staff
in the neonatal unit ensured that the Aggerwals were always “connected” to their newborns —through daily visits and round-the-clock
updates by the nursing staff.
In the weeks that followed, the Aggerwals experienced the compassion of an entire professional health care team.
The physicians, residents and nurses listened, answered questions and shared their breadth and depth of knowledge with the
Aggerwals—expertly teaching them how to care for their tiny son and daughter. When the Aggerwals returned home, this time as a
family of four, they were well prepared to handle even the most complex needs of their fragile baby twins.
“We will always be grateful for the kindness and compassion we received from the team at The Ottawa Hospital.
From the valuable prenatal classes we attended to the experts in the NICU that helped bring our babies into the world,
the staff, nurses and physicians were wonderful!”
