Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

As in most areas of the hospital, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has a multidisciplinary team of health professionals.
While each team member has his or her own area of expertise, all share a common goal—to ensure the highest quality care
for our patients and their families.
Philosophy The high-tech environment of the NICU can be very frightening and overwhelming
for parents. Therefore, as part of our philosophy, we recognize the family's
fundamental right to be involved in treatment decisions and regimens.
We also acknowledge and recognize individual and family needs, expectations
and cultural beliefs.
We
embrace the “Family-centred care” philosophy and attempt to involve our
parents in the day-to-day care of their infants as much as possible. Since
the establishment of the “Combined Mother-Baby Hospital Care”, there is
no longer a nursery, but all newborns are at their mother's bedside 24/7.
At all times, consistent with the Mission, Vision and Core Values of The Ottawa Hospital, our program is committed
to providing the highest quality of compassionate family-centred care and is dedicated to clinical excellence, education
and research in a multidisciplinary setting. We are a fully bilingual unit, which enables us to provide services in both French and English.
