Ontario Nurses Association - Nursing Professional Practice Work Group

Terms of Reference

Purpose

To share information concerning professional practice projects and issues in order to contribute to enhancing the professional practice environment at The Ottawa Hospital.

Objectives

  1. Present respective projects that will have an impact on the professional practice.
  2. Develop projects that are of mutual interest and beneficial for nurses.
  3. Facilitate problem-solving around professional issues and refer to the appropriate group: management, labour or HR. 
  4. Facilitate and encourage communication between NPP and ONA in order to enhance and support a professional practice environment for nurses
  5. Report periodically and annually on the accomplishments of the group.

Membership

  1. ONA executive
  2. Vice-President, Nursing
  3. Chief of Nursing
  4. Coordinator of Clinical Practice 
  5. Coordinator of Recruitment & Retention
  6. TOH Director Labour Relations and ONA Labour Relations Officer as ex officio
  7. Individuals can be invited to meet the objectives of the group.
  8. The meetings would be chaired alternatively by the Chief of Nursing and ONA Local Coordinator and the Secretary would also be from the same sector.

Responsibilities of Members

  1. Participate at meetings and work with other members to discuss various issues and offer solution.
  2. Contribute to the agenda.
  3. Report on follow-up.

Responsibilities of the Chairperson

  1. Provide leadership and direction in meeting objectives and facilitate participation at the meeting.
  2. Set the agenda following open invitation for all to submit items.
  3. Prepare and distribute agenda, minutes and related documentation to committee members prior to meetings.
  4. Obtain approval of the minutes from the previous meeting noting any changes required.
  5. Ensure follow-up from meetings is carried out.

Meetings

  1. Meetings are held 10 times a year. 
  2. Length of meetings will be 90 minutes.

Quorum

A majority of members (50% + 1) shall constitute a quorum.
