Ayub Akbari, MD, FRCP(C)
Associate Professor
Dr. Ayub Akbari is Associate Professor of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital
and the University of Ottawa. He received his medical education at Dow
Medical College, University of Karachi. He completed his Internal Medicine
Residency from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Akbari then
worked as an Internal Medicine specialist in Wisconsin. Following two
years of practice, he completed a fellowship in Nephrology at University
of Chicago. During this time he acquired additional training in management
of medical complications of pregnancy, especially kidney disease and high
blood pressure in pregnancy.
He came to Ottawa in 1998 and did further
clinical training in nephrology for one year and then joined the Division
of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University
of Ottawa as Assistant Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Akbari has written two book chapters on hypertension in pregnancy.
He has been invited by the Canadian Society of Nephrology to lecture on
kidney disease and hypertension in pregnancy in their review course. He
is a member of International Society of Hypertension in Pregnancy as well
as a member of International Society of Nephrology, Canadian Society of
Nephrology and American Society of Nephrology.

Kidney disease and hypertension in pregnancy • Acute renal failure • Management
of chronic renal disease • Hemodialysis
Research Interests
Dr. Akbari's research is focused on early detection of renal failure
and evaluating new markers of kidney disease. A second major area of research
interest is in early detection of kidney disease and preeclampsia in pregnancy.
Educational Interests
Undergraduate and postgraduate nephrology teaching, and education
of community physicians and the public about kidney disease.
