Welcome to The Ottawa Hospital's Department of Medicine's Web pages. The greatest strength of the Department of Medicine both at The Ottawa Hospital and at the University of Ottawa is its staff and faculty.

We have 151 full-time and 130 part-time members who are dedicated to providing the highest quality research, teaching and patient care. This is an energetic faculty that is proud of its contribution within the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital and the community at large.

On a daily basis, members of the department provide secondary, tertiary care, in both official languages, within The Ottawa Hospital and with our regional hospital partners in other centres nationally and internationally. Innovative programs for the delivery of health services, to meet the needs of our community, have been developed in highly specialized areas, but also through outreach clinics to underserved areas such as Baffin Island or the homeless in Ottawa.

The Department of Medicine is also a leader in education with 14 accredited training programs that have achieved national and international recognition. In addition, the Department of Medicine provides opportunities for visiting Canadian or foreign students, residents, and fellows in a variety of excellent programs. At this time, we train 88 Canadian residents and 7 fellows. We are also the host to 25 international postgraduates pursuing further training.

Finally, our research programs are also of national and international calibre. Within the department there are 90 principal investigators and 70 PhDs. Our department has developed many essential leading edge research programs in the basic and clinical sciences. While many of our scientists work within the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, others have chosen the hospital as a base for participating in clinical trials or epidemiology. Overall, the Department ranks as a leader in terms of career scientist support and external national grant support.
