Surgical Pathology
The Division of Surgical Pathology covers a broad range of surgical subspecialties, including bone and
soft tissue pathology, hematopathology, lymph node pathology, breast pathology, heart and lung
pathology, vascular pathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecological pathology,
genitourinary and kidney pathology, neuropathology and head and neck pathology. The division has
experience with interpretation of transplant-related tissues.
We evaluate solid tissues removed from patients, to diagnose diseases or pathology. This evaluation
typically includes a "gross" (i.e., macroscopic as seen by the naked eye) evaluation as well as a
"microscopic" (i.e., viewed under a microscope) evaluation in making a clinical diagnosis relative to
any potential disease. The division makes use of immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, and an
electron microscopy laboratory for special diagnostic procedures when indicated.
The pathologist works closely with your physician and acts as a consultant to your physician in
