Research in the Intensive Care Unit

As an academic institution, it is part of the mission of The Ottawa Hospital to participate in research studies and clinical trials. The purpose of this research is to improve clinical care and further the development of new drug therapies.

All research within the Intensive Care Unit is approved by the Ottawa Hospital Research Ethics Board and is undertaken only with the consent of the patient or their legal representative.

While you or your family member is in the Intensive Care Unit, you may be asked to participate in a study if it would be deemed to be appropriate in treating your/their illness. Participation in any research study is completely voluntary and refusing to participate will not affect care received in the ICU in any way.

For more information on current research being conducted in the Intensive Care Units, please contact the Research Coordinators:

  • Civic Campus: 613-274-9526
  • General Campus: 613-274-9754.
