THE RIDE Returns Refreshed

March 1, 2017 – It’s still officially winter but THE RIDE is ready for spring and to celebrate, registration opens today. THE RIDE, powered by Mattamy Homes, returns September 10, 2017 to support world-class research at The Ottawa Hospital.

As THE RIDE enters its eighth year, some exciting changes have been introduced:

  • New fundraising minimum of $750
  • Fundraising will support research priorities at The Ottawa Hospital, including cancer research
  • A new Virtual Ride option (in addition to the 50KM closed route, and 117KM open road)
  • Youth aged 14-17 are welcome on the closed 50KM route if they are accompanied by an adult

Tim Kluke, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, believes these changes will make this cycling adventure more inclusive to members of our community who want to support their hospital. “Lowering the fundraising minimum will open this great cycling event to more people.  We’re also excited about the new Virtual Ride which provides a great option to cyclists who might not be able to attend in person, have time constraints or are perhaps more of a solo rider. Everyone can still make a difference.”

In the last seven years, THE RIDE has raised more than $11 million for cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital.

Funding from previous years benefitted the creations of the Centre for Innovative Cancer Research at the General Campus, the implementation of many cancer-related clinical trials and the development of new cancer drugs. With new discoveries happening every day, it’s clear that funds raised through THE RIDE are powering the revolution in research happening right here in Ottawa.

THE RIDE is also pleased to announce the return of Mattamy Homes as the title sponsor for the next three years. Kevin O’Shea, Mattamy Homes Division President, is thrilled to back this important fundraiser for The Ottawa Hospital. “Ottawa is a great community to live in and cycle in. There is no better way for us to embrace active living and community giving,” says O’Shea. “Knowing that Mattamy Homes plays a role in advancing research and patient care by taking part in THE RIDE is what keeps us coming back to this fantastic event.”

Past participants are already eager to register and start their fundraising including Julie Renaud, Manager, Radiation Medicine Program at The Ottawa Hospital. “I can see the impact this type of fundraising has on our ability to do more, innovate and approach healthcare problems differently. It feels good to fight the good fight at work and on the bike too!”
