August 30, 2012 – Today, The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) celebrated the official opening of a new hemodialysis satellite unit located at Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) that will provide dialysis closer to home for existing West End hemodialysis patients of The Ottawa Hospital Regional Nephrology Program.

The 15-station unit, housed in the new James Beach Health Care Centre, will be open 12 hours per day, six days per week, allowing 48 dialysis patients per week to receive their care closer to home.

Currently, The Ottawa Hospital’s Regional Nephrology Program provides a full range of services for chronic kidney disease. The nephrology program at TOH operates hemodialysis centres at the General, Civic and Riverside campuses with four satellite centres (Bruyère Continuing Care, Cornwall, Winchester and Hawkesbury). In addition to providing dialysis closer to home for existing patients, this new satellite unit at QCH will help to address the future need for additional treatment capacity in our region (caused by continuing population growth, increasing elderly population, increasing incidence of diabetes and associated chronic kidney disease cases) while improving access to patients in the West end.
