Renal Transplant Program

  • Andrea MacDonald, Clinical Manager
  • Jessica McDougall, Clinical Care Leader

Overview

Kidney transplantation remains the best treatment for many patients with end stage renal disease.  The first kidney transplant in Ottawa occurred at the Civic Campus in 1966.  A lot has changed since that time and we currently perform approximately 100 transplants per year at the General Campus and follow over 1000 transplant patients in the clinic at the Riverside Campus.

Almost half of our patients receive a kidney from a living donor from our program or as part of the kidney paired exchange program.  We have an experienced multidisciplinary team that is committed to the success of our patients.

Our program is enhanced by the presence of world leaders in kidney transplant research and by Royal College accredited training programs for physicians training to be transplant nephrologists, and transplant surgeons.

The Ottawa Hospital has a well-established Living Kidney Donor Program.  Living donation has many advantages for recipients including less time on dialysis, better transplant outcomes and time to plan for the transplant.  Living donors undergo a thorough assessment with an independent team to ensure that donation is appropriate for them and that there is minimal risk to their health.
