The clinical dietitian provides assessment, treatment and counseling to patients with nutrition-related issues.

  • By completing nutritional assessments, the Clinical Dietitian can identify patients that are at risk of malnutrition based on their food habits, diagnosis, age, weight changes and laboratory values. The dietitian will ensure implementation of a proper diet and educate with the goal of maintaining or improving patient health.
  • The Registered Dietitian works in collaboration with other team members to ensure optimal nutrition during rehabilitation which consequently enables the patients to fully participate in their therapies.
  • In the outpatient setting, the Dietitian also provides assessment, monitoring and education so patients can better manage their medical condition with specific diets and improved eating patterns.

About Registered Dietitians

  • The practice of dietetics is the assessment of nutrition, nutrition-related conditions and the treatment and prevention of nutrition-related disorders.
  • Registered dietitians are the most knowledgeable when it comes to advice about your nutrition. In Canada, a person must have official certification and the appropriate credentials to be called a “registered dietitian.”.
  • Registered dietitians fall under the Regulated Health Professions Act and professional practice is governed by The College of Dietitians of Ontario
  • ( http://www.cdo.on.ca/en/ ). The designation is protected by law and no one can call themselves a dietitian unless they are a member of The College of Dietitians of Ontario. Members must have a Bachelor of Science in nutrition, have completed a year-long accredited dietetic internship and pass an entrance exam to the college. The designation “nutritionist” or other related titles are not protected by law and can be used by anyone
