To better serve our applicants, we have established Applications Periods.
We only accept new volunteer applications during these periods.

It is important to plan ahead and apply several months before you plan to begin volunteering.

Application Periods:

December – March for Spring/Summer start

This is the application period for summer students – see details below

June– July for a Fall start

October – November for Winter start

Summer Student guidelines / timelines

  • The deadline to apply as a summer student is the end of March
  • Age requirements; 16 yrs and up
  • Commitment: minimum 50 hours:
    • Must be available for 3 shifts per week for the months of July and August
    • Must be available for a minimum of 7 weeks (after vacation)

Commitment and Qualificationsinformation-desk-image

  • Eight-month commitment (50 hour minimum for summer students). Cottagers and snowbirds are welcome!
  • Most assignments require one shift of 3-4 hours per week.
  • Desire to provide EXCELLENT customer service at all times
  • Excellent at working in a cooperative team environment
  • Eager to participate in courses and change practices in a continuous pursuit of excellence
  • Age requirements: 16 yrs and up

Timelines

To ensure the best quality of volunteers and services offered, we have a thorough screening and training process. If a good fit is found for your interests and availability, it can take 1 to 2 months to start volunteering. Please note that in order for information to be current, we keep applications for a period of four months, after which, you need to re-apply.

Steps for Becoming a Volunteer

  1. If you are a good fit for our commitment level and current needs, fill-out an online Application at the end of the next page.
  2. If a suitable match is found for your interests and availability, an interview may be scheduled. You will be asked to bring two completed Reference Forms to the interview (no family or friends please).
  3. If you are given an assignment – The next steps are:
    • TB testing – free of charge at the hospital
    • Criminal record check (for those 18 years and over) – free of charge with a letter
    • Photo ID and uniform – $20 deposit required
    • Training and orientation to The Ottawa Hospital and your specific assignment

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation organizes events throughout the year, raising much needed funds for patient care and research at The Ottawa Hospital.
