To better serve our applicants, we have established Applications Periods.
We only accept new volunteer applications during these periods.

It is important to plan ahead and apply several months before you plan to begin volunteering.

We are currently accepting applications
Until October 31st, 2017

This application period we will be reducing the number of volunteers we accept to focus on a few key areas. We will resume normal operations the following application period. Please see below for details.

Application Periods:

Oct 9th – Oct 31st for:
Civic Campus: Information Desk, Information Guides, and Emergency Department
Riverside Campus: Coffee Shop
There is also an “other” category for applicants not interested in these key areas

Dec. 4th – March 30th  for Spring/Summer start*

June 1st – July 29th for a Fall start

*summer students will need to apply during the Dec – March Application Period.

Summer Student guidelines / timelines

  • The deadline to apply as a summer student is the end of March
  • Age requirements; 16 yrs and up
  • Commitment: minimum 50 hours:
    • Must be available for 3 shifts per week for the months of July and August
    • Must be available for a minimum of 7 weeks (after vacation)

Commitment and Qualificationsinformation-desk-image

  • Eight-month commitment (50 hour minimum for summer students). Cottagers and snowbirds are welcome!
  • Most assignments require one shift of 3-4 hours per week.
  • Desire to provide EXCELLENT customer service at all times
  • Excellent at working in a cooperative team environment
  • Eager to participate in courses and change practices in a continuous pursuit of excellence
  • Age requirements: 16 yrs and up


To ensure the best quality of volunteers and services offered, we have a thorough screening and training process. If a good fit is found for your interests and availability, it can take 1 to 2 months to start volunteering. Please note that in order for information to be current, we keep applications for a period of four months, after which, you need to re-apply.

Steps for Becoming a Volunteer

  1. If you are a good fit for our commitment level and current needs, fill-out an online Application at the end of the next page.
  2. If a suitable match is found for your interests and availability, an interview may be scheduled. You will be asked to bring two completed Reference Forms to the interview (no family or friends please).
  3. If you are given an assignment – The next steps are:
    • TB testing – free of charge at the hospital
    • Criminal record check (for those 18 years and over) – free of charge with a letter
    • Photo ID and uniform – $20 deposit required
    • Training and orientation to The Ottawa Hospital and your specific assignment

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation organizes events throughout the year, raising much needed funds for patient care and research at The Ottawa Hospital.
