What is The Ottawa Hospital?

A Hospital Without Borders
The Ottawa Hospital is a leading academic health sciences centre
in Canada. Together with its partners,
TOH is becoming nationally recognized for outstanding patient care, education and research.
Services are concentrated on three main campuses: the
Civic, General and Riverside.
TOH is a compassionate provider of comprehensive, high quality,
patient-focused health care services in English and French
to a population of 1.5 million people in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. It boasts
specialty centres in cancer, heart, kidney and vision care, as well as
rehabilitation services.
As one of the largest teaching hospitals in Canada and one of the Ottawa area's largest employers, The Ottawa Hospital is an invaluable asset to the National Capital Region's economic health and helps to make Ottawa one of the country's best cities in which to live, work and raise a family.
TOH is also a proud partner in health care delivery in the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, a fundamental component of the Government's plan to build a stronger health care system in Ontario.
The Ottawa Hospital is governed by a voluntary Board
of Governors, 20 appointed and elected members, including
representatives from the University of Ottawa, and many sectors of the
community.
Partners in Patient Care
Located at the Civic Campus, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute
is an internationally recognized centre of excellence. It is Canada's
only complete cardiac centre, encompassing prevention, diagnosis, treatment,
rehabilitation, research and education.
Partners in Education and Research
The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is the research
arm of The Ottawa Hospital and a major part of the University of Ottawa's
Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences. As a result of this partnership,
discoveries are now achieving worldwide impact, delivered as solutions
for patients, and taught to health care professionals in our own community
first! The OHRI is one of the fastest growing and most respected hospital-based
research institutes in Canada.
Part of the mission of The Ottawa Hospital is to train the next generation
of health professionals. Our major partner in this work is the University
of Ottawa. Many of the hospital's health professionals and researchers
also teach in the university's Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences.
At the same time, medical and health sciences students of all levels learn
on the job at The Ottawa Hospital, where they make important contributions
to the health and healing of our patients.
Partners in Building Community Support
The Ottawa Hospital and its partners are fortunate to have the unlimited
endorsement of a generous community. Our foundations and volunteer associations
work together to build that support, ensuring that our community can be
home to the newest medical equipment, the best facilities, cutting-edge
research and the most highly trained health professionals.
The Ottawa Hospital Foundation's mission is to inspire
and enable people to support the highest quality health care at The Ottawa
Hospital and The Rehabilitation Centre, and to support world-class research
at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.
Each year, over 1,700 volunteers donate their skills
to help the hospital fulfill its role. These volunteers belong to one
or more of the following organizations:
- The Ottawa Hospital - Civic Auxiliary
- The Friends of The Ottawa Hospital - General Campus
- The Ottawa Hospital Riverside Campus Auxiliary
- The Rehabilitation Centre Volunteer Association
- Canadian Cancer Society Volunteer Services
- Auxiliary Volunteers at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute
