Expansion of The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program

The Ottawa Hospital and the Queensway Carleton Hospital have been witness to a great deal of construction on their sites related to the expansion of The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program.

At TOH, the project includes adding two new radiation machines (from six to eight) and centralizing them at the General Campus for more effective, coordinated treatment. We will add 15 new chemotherapy chairs, for a total of 47 allowing for a 50% increase in the number of patients treated. The new setting will also offer more natural light, a comfortable environment, and access to outdoor areas to patients, families and staff which will help the recovery process.

At the Queensway Carleton Hospital, the new construction will see a three-storey building which will house three radiation machines, 33 chemotherapy bays and 2 clinics. The three-storey centre will connect with the QCH’s main facility to facilitate movement between the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre and the other medical services necessary to support the cancer program. To support this new service, QCH must also expand its diagnostic imaging services, operating suites, laboratory and pharmacy.

The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program is the second largest outpatient Cancer Program in Ontario, and plays a significant role in cancer care in Ottawa and the Champlain LHIN. This expansion will help reduce wait times (once completed, we expect them to be among the lowest in the province), have a meaningful and direct impact on front-line patient care, and support innovative clinical trials that will lead to better patient outcomes. It is a win-win situation for both The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program and the community we serve.

We thank all of you who are involved in the expansion of The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, and look forward to celebrating this important milestone for Ottawa, the Champlain LHIN, and its health care community.
